Part of my journey back home from my internship in LA was making a stop in San Francisco to get more acquainted with the conservation labs of the bay area. My first lab visit was to the San Francisco MOMA where I meet with paper conservator, Amanda Hunter Johnson.
After a sit down over tea where we talked a lot about the environment at the different programs and training experiences, she walked me around the lab to show the different projects they have going on. What was really great to hear her talk about was working with the living artist and how the preservation of their work can effect the piece as it changes through time. Since they are a museum that has many shows and loans they spend most of their time dealing with projects for exhibitions. Not a lot of time with side projects or art that no one has a need for displaying. It was interesting to see what your priorities become when working in a large museum.
A brief chat with Michelle Barger and the other conservators rounded up my visit and I came away with a great new perspective of conservation in a large institution. It was also exciting to hear about their expansion project, which will result with more lab space!
